Journal February 9

2. I feel like the Merchant of Venice fits the Green World Theory very well. It has to separate lands, Belmont and Venice. In my mind, I see Venice as the normal world, and I see Belmont as the Green World. One example of this is that the normal world is usually run by males. Venice fits this part of the theory because the main characters in Venice are all male (Antonio, Bassanio, Shylock). Also in  the green world, the females are usually the ones running it. Belmont fits this part because Portia and Nerissa are really the only characters that we have seen in Belmont. They are also both women, and Portia seems to run Belmont because she is able to choose her man. Usually in those days, the men would choose the women, but Portia can tell any man that he can't participate in the contest for her love. The normal world often has many laws and has order. This is shown in the quote, " Three thousand ducats—’tis a good round sum. Three months from twelve, then. Let me see. The rate. " this was said by Shylock when Shylock was giving Antonio and Bassanio a loan. This supports the theory because the idea of loans means that there would have to be some laws. Romance is usually a major theme in the green world. This quote, "Therefore the lottery that he hath devised in these three chests of gold, silver, and lead, whereof who chooses his meaning chooses you, will no doubt never be chosen by any rightly but one who shall rightly love" supports this idea. Nerissa is explaining the lottery to Portia and the audience. This lottery is for Portia's hand in marriage. If a suitor comes along who wants to try the lottery, Portia gives them a choice of picking one of three caskets. One casket contains gold, another contains silver, and the third contains lead. If the pick the on with the gold in it, then they get to marry Portia. However, if they pick the other two, then they can never talk to Portia again. This fits in with the green world theory because this lottery has to do with romance. In the end, I believe that Belmont is the green world, and that Venice is the normal world. However, this could change as the book goes on.

Journal February 1

2. I believe that it is very useful to study Shakespeare. First of all, he created if 2000 words when he was alive. This is an amazing task and reading Shakespeare would certainly improve anyone's vocabulary skills. Another reason that it is important to read Shakespeare is because Shakespeare is an important historical figure. He is the figure head for writers in that time period and changed the style of writing. His works are also still relevant to this day. They talk about problems that are still relevant. They also give us a look into the past unlike other stories. We also have more work from him than other writers of that time which is another reason why we choose Shakespeare over other writers. Shakespeare was also a wonderful story writer. His stories were often very complex and contained many twists and turns. His characters were also wonderfully created. He didn't just have them black and white like other stories of that time. He gave depth to them. He made some seem good and then do a bad thing or too. They weren't just good or bad, some were in between. He has also influenced our culture, and many stories now are based off of his stories, like the Lion King. Many people use quotes from Shakespeare and in order to pick up on these quotes one must read Shakespeare. Those are the reasons why I believe  Shakespeare is still useful to study.

Journal Dec. 17

1. Team 1's major arguement was that colonialism generally made the country better. It improved the people's well-being anlong with proviene them with better health options. It also gave them better oppurtonities and made them more intelligent.

2. Team 1's major evidence to back up these arguments was that there was a writing saying that African men were taller after colonialism. Taller men meant healthier men. They also kept focusing on the fact that the countries GED had raised after colonialism.

3. Team 2's main arguement was that the colonizers had taken away the African culture. They also argued that the British were showing off African arguements as trophies. 

4. They didn't have much evidence to support there arguement. One peice of evidence they had was that Alex had been to the British museum and got the impression that they were using the artifacts as throphies. Another peice of evidence they had was when Dr. Jafar said that Nigeria lost tons of artwork.

5. Right now I think that team 1 won the arguement based on the fact that they seemed more prepared and had stronger evidence. However at the time of the debate, I thought team 2 had won. That was probably because team 2 did very good in the Grand rebuttal by contradicting Team 1's points. Now I feel like Team 2 did better in the whole debate not just in the Grand Rebuttal. Also writing this blog helped me see that team one actually had more evidence. 

Journal Dec. 9

Overall I enjoyed the book a lot. I thought that it was a lot easier to read anything in than Heart of Darkness but I also thought the story wasn't as interesting. I think this book showed that the African people didn't want to be colonized where as Heart of Darkness just showed that the Europeans wanted to colonize Africa. However I feel like Heart of Darkness showed that horrors of colonism where as this book didn't really touch upon the that. I felt like since the book used easier vocabulary the meaning wasn't  as strong. In Heart of Darkness, Conrad showed how bad colonialism was by being very descriptive of the African people's treatment. This book wasn't as descriptive which is why I feel like it didn't show how bad colonialism was. I feel like this book just showed that the African people didn't like colonialism. 

Journal Dec. 5

I found it a little sad how christianity had influenced Umuofia. I mean, Umuofia had an amazing culture and now that culture is not around as much in the book because Christians had taken over Umuofia. I think that Christianity has affected Umuofia a lot. It has converted a few people to Christianity. It has also caused a big stir in the community. This was really not needed. I don't really understand why they had to destroy this beautiful culture trying to spread their ideas onto people who had their own ideas. However, knowing that most of the people in Umuofia still tried to keep up with their original culture. I don't agree with Okonkwo though, when he said that he should of had a big welcome back into the city. I think he needs to calm down. He expects that he should get everything and that doesn't happen all the time. He also killed someone, I don't think someone should be rewarded or welcomed back after killing someone, not even after seven years. I think that the Christians need to realize that there culture is not supreme. I believe that everyone's culture is equal which is why I dislike colonialism. I would be fine if the Christian people that came into Umuofia, settled down, and practiced their religion. Then people could just come in if they are interested. I do not think that it was necessary for the Christians to be going around and disrupting the people just to try to "sell" their religion. I am perfectly fine with Christianity but I dislike it when one culture or religion tries to put down or convert people unwillingly to their religion.

Journal Dec. 5

I think that the Abame tribe was so violent to the white evangelists partly because they were confused. Being confused often makes people scared. It also tends to make people either very defensive or offensive. These people probably became both defensive and offensive. This is why they were so opposed to the Christian ideas. Since they were confused by the chrisitian ideas, they probably lashed out on the Christians. They also found it weird how they didn't die even though the Christians were in the evil forest. This probably caused them think that the Christians were demons since they could survive in a the evil forest. Since no one wants to be around demons the Abame tribe probably attacked them for this reason. Most of the people that joined Christians to escape from there home life. The Abame tribe probably also attacked the Chirstians because they thought that the Christians were taking people from there village. 

Journal Dec. 3

I think part of the reason that Okonkwo was not eating was that he was still in shock. This probably worried him because he probably never experienced it before. He also probably thought that he was being womanly because he was experiencing shock and feeling emotions. This shows that he is not fully a man inside according to him but he wants to do anything to become one. His "son" was also killed because he wasn't Okonkwo's true son. This probably made him feel more like a woman because he had to deal with the fact that basically his son wasn't good enough. He was also left with only one other son, Nyowe. He probably felt like a woman because Nyowe wasn't that much of a man. If he could not have any manly sons than that would make him not manly. This shows that he is self conscious about his manliness. One can see that he really wants to be treated like a man which is why during the sacraficed of Ikemefuna. He doesn't stand back and try to avoid the sacrafice. He jumps right in and kills Ikemefuna. This shows that he wants to impress everyone with his manliness. However, deep down on the inside he is sad because his son has died. He doesn't want to let this show but it has been shown when he doesn't eat. He feels like this makes him a woman.
