Journal Oct. 31
Happy Halloween. While doing the transcription I found it pretty tedious. I took a really long time to do it while the rest of my group had finish. I would like to do it again. I also started to get faster as l went on. This could have been because I started to remember more than just one word or because I started to focus more. I also felt like it helped me to remember what he said. If you had asked me what he said like a day after the interview I would not be able to remember all the as well. Now if you ask me I will be able to answer much better. I felt like I learned a lot of stuff that I had missed or forgotten before such as why Houston is a good city for an artist and who inspired him to be an artist. I thought that transcribing was a good process to go through. It was tedious but at the same time it was fun. It helped me remeber things. I would like to do it again if we have another project requiring it.

Overall I think the interview went really well. I found it a little interesting how at the beginning he answered the questions with maybe one or two words but then as he got more comfortable he started answering the questions with a few more words and then eventually going to long stories about each question. This may have been because our questions got better as we progressed but I believe that it was because he became more comfortable with talking to us and became more open. It was also really really cool how he took us around his apartment and showed us all of his work and all of his students work that he had kept. I felt like the interview went pretty well but I thought there were a few mistakes that could've been fixed. One example in our interview is that the interviewer would say wow in the middle of his sentences. When we were transcribing, at first, we thought we had to put all those wows in and that just took a lot longer. Now that we found out that we don't have to put the house and I don't think that such a bad mistake. Probably our biggest mistake that was bringing the flip camera with only one hour of memory. We thought the both the flip cameras had the same amount of memory remember to check if the other flip camera has a different amount of memory. Since our interview went over an hour we did not have enough memory on the camera so we had to switch to Kirby's phone. Unfortunately Kirby's phone had very little memory on it, so we were only able to get five minutes off of that so we had to use my phone and got our last 10 minutes. This called to have blank spots in the video. If we have used other flip camera it would've been one straight video without blank patches missing. Again overall I felt like the interview was really intrresting.

Not many scary things have happened to me but one of them happened at the Rennisance Festival. Lastyear I went to the Rennisance Festival with two of my friends and we decided to go in a maze. There were two different mazes, a haunted house and a neon maze. We chose the neon maze and we were given special glasses that made the neon paint twist and the walls contort. We were walking through and it was dark except for the black lights shinning on the neon walls. We got to the end of the maze and there was a grown man sitting in a black cloak. To exit yip had to pass by him. We were all so scared and then Caitlan told me to just run past him. I sprinted past him and he the yelled to me that I had to give him my glasses and I started lauhghing. I then handed him my glasses and the situation turned from scary to funny. They were many funny experiences just hanging out with my friends. I can't remember them that well but here was one time when my friend poured nearly all of those shredded mozzarella jars on his pizza. He left to go to the bathroom and my other friend pour probably a tablespoon of those red chili flakes onto his pizza. We then hid them under the shredded mozzarella. When he came back he was in for a shock. Many other funny things happened at the camp that I went to last summer. One of the scariest things that ever happened to me was when my sister and my dad went for a hike in Canada. My family had taken a hike to get to a beach. My sister and dad then wanted to hike even further over a boulder and onto some rocks near the ocean to get a better view. I was on the beach with my mom waiting for them for about thirty minutes. We could not here them nor see them. I just remember hoping that they hadn't been swept of the rocks into the cold, harsh waters. Finally I saw the tip of my dad's head and I knew they were safe.

The first question I want to ask him is how has Houston in general changed over the time while you have lived here? I am interested in this because he has lived in Houston for a while and I think that it would be helpful to know.
I would also ask what is your favorite art piece and why? I think that he would have a lot of reason for having a favorite peice and he would and it would be interesting to learn about this.
I would also ask what are some of your major projects right now and are there any more in the future that you know of? I would not be able to find this on the internet because he would be the only one knowing what he is planning. It will also be interesting to learn what he thinks of as major.
I would also be interested to learn if he would envision staying in Houston for the rest of your life and what is your favorite thing about Houston? He might want to move or change city. I would want to know why he wanted to stay in Houston and why he was attracted to Houston.
I would also want to know if there are any other interests that you would like to pursue in the future? He might want to do other things and he probably doesn't talk about it that much because society has placed him in a box and expects him to just be an artist and paint and sit quietly.

The questions all seemed to be very helpful with moving the story. Even though this was an hour long series of interviews that I watched I felt like it was only mabye twenty minutes. This is because the interviewer kept the questions interesting and the questions did not just have a one word answer. One question thati found good was when Father Thomas Santos was asked what the hardest part of listening to a scrupulous persons confessions was. He responded by saying that it was hard to be patient with such trivial questions and that it was also hard for him to be loving because he was bored. It was interesting because the questions all fit together well but it would have been impossible to know what someone's answers would be. These answers were needed to make some of he questions. I think that next week my group should write all the questions we are planning on asking but also being prepared to make up questions on the spot if he says something interesting that we don't have any questions about. Another question that I found interesting was when Jeffery was asked if he felt like a victim. Jeffery said no which surmised me because he had been discriminated against ever since ths case. I certainly would have felt like a victim. I think that itis very important to research the subject before hand so that we are not caught off guard by so ething they said. This will help us be able to make up questionse more easily.

I think that one thing that drives Andrew Stanton is that he wants to make people care about what he is doing. He wants to give readers a story that they will care about and enjoy reading. What drives me is wanting to change lives for the better. I want to positively influence at least one persons life. It's scary to think about going that in two hundred years you most likely won't be remembered. I don't want that to happen. I want to be remembered by at least one person as the man who gave him money when I couldn't buy food or the man who gave people shelter when they did not have a house. I know that this is a grand wish but I believe that it is possible. I want to be able to change people's life's for the better. I want to help people and I believe that everyone should have equal rights. We say that everyone has equal rights in America but that is a flat out lie. People are constantly put down everyday and I think that needs to stop. My spine is the idea that I don't care what people say about me. They are holding themselves back by saying those things and if I choose to respond to them then I am holding myself back. If I let them go then I can continue going forward and helping people. This video helped me to learn how to make one care. You have to let them guess a little for themselves you can't just give them all the answers. It didn't really affect the way I see the world it just helped me understand why I see it that way. Andrew Stanton said, " We're born problem solvers, work compelled to deduce and to deduct, because that's what we do in real life, it's well organized absence information that draws us in." This quote helped me to better understand why I see the world the way that I do.

I was surprised by the amount of all the movie theaters there were in Houston. I was also surprised of how ornate they were. I was sad that most of them got torn down or were not protected. I really want to go to one of the ones that is still standing because I think that it would be interesting to see. I was also surprised with how many people these theaters could fit. These were huge. They could seat up to about 2,000 people. Nowadays theaters seat up to mabye 200 about. I was also surprised with how so many people turned up in the 1920s to hear that boxing game at Miller theater. Boxing must have been much more popular in those days. I was also surprised to hear how Houston wasn't affected by the Great Depression. I had expected it to be hit hard because it was a big city. However since it had oil which was a nessecity, it did not get hit hard. Jesse jones also built a lot of buildings and roads. This helped people get jobs because there were more places to work. Artists were also hired to paint murals, this gave them a job. Some of those murals are still around today such as the ones in the Houston Public Library. I was surprised with how some bad things made Houston successful. One example is when Saudi Arabia stopped giving us oil because we supported Isreal. Houston got profit from this because we had lots of oil and we could sell it. This also caused us to look for other places with oil which is how we found the Alaskin Pipeline. Another tragic event that was good for Houston was Hurricane Katrina. We provided protection and help to citizens. This was the largest event in which the government worked with private people. We also helped over 200,000 people. This provided a model to people of the USA and people of the world.
