I was surprised by the amount of all the movie theaters there were in Houston. I was also surprised of how ornate they were. I was sad that most of them got torn down or were not protected. I really want to go to one of the ones that is still standing because I think that it would be interesting to see. I was also surprised with how many people these theaters could fit. These were huge. They could seat up to about 2,000 people. Nowadays theaters seat up to mabye 200 about. I was also surprised with how so many people turned up in the 1920s to hear that boxing game at Miller theater. Boxing must have been much more popular in those days. I was also surprised to hear how Houston wasn't affected by the Great Depression. I had expected it to be hit hard because it was a big city. However since it had oil which was a nessecity, it did not get hit hard. Jesse jones also built a lot of buildings and roads. This helped people get jobs because there were more places to work. Artists were also hired to paint murals, this gave them a job. Some of those murals are still around today such as the ones in the Houston Public Library. I was surprised with how some bad things made Houston successful. One example is when Saudi Arabia stopped giving us oil because we supported Isreal. Houston got profit from this because we had lots of oil and we could sell it. This also caused us to look for other places with oil which is how we found the Alaskin Pipeline. Another tragic event that was good for Houston was Hurricane Katrina. We provided protection and help to citizens. This was the largest event in which the government worked with private people. We also helped over 200,000 people. This provided a model to people of the USA and people of the world.

I would have loved to have gone to one of the more ornate movie palaces as well! It almost seems like you would want to get all dressed up to do so, unlike going to the movie theater today. If you would like to go and see one of the smaller movie palaces, the River Oaks Theatre is still standing! They mostly show independent films, but they also have awesome midnight movies on Saturdays. The website is: http://www.landmarktheatres.com/Market/Houston/Houston_Frameset.htm
ReplyDeleteI would also have loved to see the old Miller Outdoor Theater, when it still had the columns. I had no idea that the columns around the fountain were from Miller! I also cannot imagine that many people coming out just to hear a boxing match on the radio. How cool is that?
The same thing happened here in Houston during the recession that we are just now coming out of that happened during the Great Depression. We did not have nearly the financial issues and unemployment that other cities had in the US. In Nevada, the unemployment got as high as 15 percent! Some are already calling this the Great Recession.
